Siding replaced with blue stucco
in Silver Spring, Maryland
Here's how we did it:
Old vinyl siding was old and brittle. Lawnmowers and weedeaters easily knocked holes in the wall.
Siding was caked with algae and other stains. House was due for a facelift.
Step flashing was covered with counter flashing and overlapped with our drainable casing bead. Note how we protected the roof with tar paper.
Casing bead is drilled out every 8 inches or so to let the water out of the wall. A gap is left over the counter flashing.
Metal flashing is put over the windows and sealed against the wall with tape. Flashing has a steep angle to deflect water away from the house.
Top flange of flashing is overlapped with tar paper.
Band on top of chimney is formed with two inch styrofoam. Don't worry, the styrofoam is temporary. The band is not
only decorative, but extends the life of the chimney by providing a drip edge. The top is well angled for water run off.
Crown on top of chimney and band are sculptured for shedding water.
But OF COURSE we embedded a coin in the top of the chimney.
Window sills are formed with 2 inch styrofoam and filled in.
Forms removed, sill is ready for the blue finish.
Brown coat is portland cement, lime and sand. An honest 3/4 inch thick.
We used wood strips to form the outside corners. Wall is rodded off using a 6 foot rod.
We do very little synthetic, mostly natural finishes. We used Total Wall synthetic to reduce cracking. Color was made using
a Sherwin Williams formula.
Putting on the blue finish coat.
A PVC board is put on to support the electric meter. We put flashing over the top before the stucco was done.
This avoids rot behind the meter.
How does it look ?
Back finished. Doesn't it look inviting ?
