New color stucco house
in McLean, Virginia
Here's how we did it:
New roof showing step flashing.
We put on a counter flashing, and overlapped with drainable plaster stop and tar paper.
Top of window angles water into wall. Don't make them like they used to.
Window corrected with flashing angled away from wall.
Bottom of wall is spaced with a sheet of correx.
Finished wall showing gap.
Scaffold up. Putting on tar paper. Technically, Zip Wall is supposed to be a vapor barrier. I don't trust zip wall alone as a vapor barrier.
Aluminum channel screed really isn't much more expensive than galvanized expansion joint, but looks ten times better.
Mitered pre made intersections are available.
Pre made mitered outside corners saved us a lot of grief.
Joints are oiled before applying finish coat to save clean up.
Brown coat rodded off with a 6 foot rod.
3/4 inch furring strips on the parapet wall provide a nailer for the coping.
Back of pipes are sealed with tape before stucco is applied. Back of electrical boxes are done the same way. Sealing the pipe after the stucco is done with a glob of caulk does no good.
Finish coat is white portland cement and crushed quartz. Quartz is industrial quartz from US Silica. Bottom panels are gray.
Gray is Repose Gray from Sherwin Williams. Paint tint is mixed in the mortar. This is true custom color cement finish.

Texture is made by first rubbing the finish with a rubber float, and the troweling using random strokes.
