REAL Color cement finish coat

chimney
Color stucco finish
One of the three chimneys has the color applied. The finish coat is white Portland cement, lime and silica sand. Color is #1100 from Expo stucco. Note our typical drip cap at the top.
The color goes on the front.
Flagstone chimney shoulder
Flagstone chimney shoulder
The chimney "shoulder" is covered with flagstone. The stone isn't porous and is more reliable than stucco. You may have seen this on our other chimneys.
This is view from the bottom. I hope you can see what is going on. The stone protrudes for a good drip edge.

The flagstone is the covered with plastic
before the finish goes on.
chimney
stucco scored to look like limestone block
Here's a view of the chimney showing the 3 step band and the drip cap at the top.
The wall behind the kitchen is also scored to look like limestone block. Here, the finish coat is troweled to a stone like look and feel.
arch surround
bay window.
Another arch surround with a real keystone
is added on the front. Some of the windows
have a three step SOLID stucco sill.
The stucco projects about an inch below the bay window to prevent water from running back on the ceiling.
Electric meter is also flashed
coins are embedded on the top of the chimneys
Electric meter is also flashed. Water will get
behind these, too. I think the electric companies should come up with a different color besides battleship grey.
As usual, coins are embedded on the top of the chimneys. I used dollar coins. Maybe someone will climb up and see these one day.

sills project past the sides of the window surrounds
Thick band has a dramatic appearancef
Note how the ends of the sills project past the sides of the window surrounds. This is not only
for appearance, but to deflect water away from the bottom of the window.
Thick band has a dramatic appearance.
Now you can see what the downspout chases were for, if you visited the last update.
gutter helmet wasn't big enough
lath-like
gutter guard
This is important: The small slit in the gutter helmet wasn't big enough for the volume of water running off this big steep roof. A hole is cut in the gutter helmet.
The hole is covered with a piece of lath-like
gutter guard. Note how our kick out flashing
keeps water from running between the gutter and the wall. We fixed a chimney in Reston that had this same problem, but already had developed rot behind the wall.
We stuccoed the retaining walls
Putting on the finish in back
We stuccoed the retaining walls as well, after filling in the joints in the flagstone.
Putting on the finish in back. This was a big house and took a long time. I hope to get more like it
again.
